Weingardt Presented 2006 National Heritage Award

October 27, 2006 - New York City. Richard G. Weingardt of Denver, Colorado, was presented the 2006 Heritage and History Award by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) at the John Roebling 200th Anniversary Symposium held in the Marriott Hotel at the Brooklyn Bridge. Weingardt was cited for his years of achievement and leadership within engineering and in society. In ASCE's 155 years of existence, he is the 69th person to receive its Heritage Award.

Weingardt's citation reads “As a 'Renaissance man,' you have set an example for all civil engineers to follow. Of particular note within your notable lifelong body of work are your outstanding civil engineering history and heritage research, documentation, articles and publications, such as your recent book Engineering Legends.”

American civil engineers have been an integral part of the nation's progress and development, from the 1700s to present times. In Engineering Legends, Weingardt identifies many of them and spotlights 32. Their projects range from the Erie Canal and Transcontinental Railroad to the Golden Gate Bridge and today's tallest skyscrapers and space-age-looking sports arenas.

The firm Weingardt founded 40 years ago in January 1966 has completed 4,500-plus major projects worldwide. Many are engineering excellence award winners, including the Jefferson County Courthouse, Concourses A, B and C at DIA, One DTC office building, Integrated Teaching and Learning Laboratories at the University of Colorado in Boulder, and Saleh Kamel Office Tower, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Headquartered in Reston, Virginia, ASCE is the oldest engineering society in the U.S. and the largest civil engineering association in the world. Civil engineers build the world's infrastructure. In doing so, they quietly shape the history of nations around the world. Without the many contributions of civil engineers, the public's health, safety and standard of living would be greatly compromised.
